Jewel’s Bakery & Cafe is a savior for those with allergies, we take my sister their for her gluten free cravings, they made one of my son’s dairy free birthday cakes and now they are putting a huge focus on plant based dishes. Julie Moreno, the owner/Chef, told me that she was listening to what her guests were interested in eating and putting those items onto the menu. What she’s created is crave worthy dishes to go along with fan favorites like the chicken and waffles.
Speaking of the chicken and waffles, here they are in all their glory. Tender and seasoned pieces of fried chicken lay atop a beautifully crisp waffle and then you drizzle or douse, in my case, the waffle with buttermilk syrup and sweet hot honey sauce. I ate these on Friday and went back in again to eat them with my sister on Monday, don’t judge!
New items that we tasted from the plant based menu were the Asian Chop Kale salad, which was full of broccoli, brussels sprouts, cabbage slaw, carrots, almonds, mandarin, bell pepper and tossed with a peanut ginger dressing. You would most likely never find me ordering tacos without meat in them. I LOVE my meat but when the Whole Garden Tacos came to the table and I took a bite, I couldn’t resist eating them all up. They were packed with sweet potato, avocado, corn, spinach, mushroom, red bell pepper, quinoa, black beans, grilled onions and topped with lime cilantro cashew cream and a side of salsa. You would think that it would just be too much stuff inside the taco but it all works so well together.
Julie mentioned that the Ginger Peanut Bowl was one of her favorite dishes and I can see why. It’s healthy food but it doesn’t have that dreaded healthy taste to it. You get to eat a flavorful bowl of grilled chicken, carrots, zucchini, spinach, red cargo rice, bell pepper, mushroom, quinoa, onions and feel good about it. Good enough to enjoy their raw desserts. We had the brownie, which is made up of mostly black beans but you won’t be able to tell, it tastes like a chocolate brownie! And we also tried the raw cheesecake. These desserts are seasonal and may vary but you can find them in the dessert case.
You can also find a rotating special’s menu with items like bacon green chili mac & cheese, Thai shrimp pasta, a Western burger and chicken shawarma pita to name a few. For all the information you need and to see the new menus go to their website: https://jewelsbakeryandcafe.com/
