It’s been 70 years since Woody Johnson founded the infamous Macayo’s legacy, and the name is stronger than ever with their newest culinary adventure, the launch of Macayo’s Mexican Grill & Cantina in Scottsdale. We recently had the pleasure of testing out their newest innovative creations like deep-fried avocados and jicama tortilla shelled tacos, both of which did not disappoint. Also exclusive to the Grill & Cantina location, is the expansion of their beverage program, complete with hosted Tequila Dinners, beginning September 24th at 6:00pm. Not only are they introducing new menu items, but a new look as well! Out with the old and in the with the new, energetic and hip decor while still keeping homage to the Old World Mexican flair, they have added a new tequila window featuring an ultra-premium tequila selection, and not one, but two outside patios, perfect for entertaining. Woody’s legacy of having passion for taking care of the Macayo’s guests lives on, and is abundantly clear in delivering each meal with authenticity and unequaled hospitality.
We started the night out with the Queso Fundido complete with jalapeno, onion, poblano chile, chile de arbol, ancho chile, and a splash of Jalisco hot sauce. We washed down the queso with one their Blood Orange Margaritas, perfectly sweet and just a hint of salt.As if the Queso wasn’t enough, we then snacked on their Fried Avocado appetizer topped with chipotle crema and their insanely delicious Jicama Shrimp Tacos with Fresh Fruit Salsa. The jicama shells were a huge hit at our table, surprisingly crunchy, yet refreshing and held up well to the filling.
We had the choice of 5 different entree selections, and after much debate (they all sounded good), we agreed upon the Hand Dipped Relleno comprised of an anaheim chile stuffed with shredded cheese, battered and hand-fried, and my personal favroite the Green Chile Pork Stew Chile. We made sure to make room for the homemade Churros with Mexican Chocolate sauce for dessert, the perfect way to top off the night. I want to personally thank the Macayo’s family for including AZ Foodie in their teatsing event and looking forward to my next visit!
The Scottsdale Grill & Cantina is the only Macayo’s location serving up these new menu items as well as the newest branding, and has been deemed their test kitchen for all future culinary research and development.
