Chef Julie Moreno of Jewel’s Bakery and Café in the Arcadia neighborhood of Phoenix has certainly made a name for herself in the gluten-free dining scene since opening in 2009. And to be quite honest in the dining scene for all foodies alike! This neighborhood hangout is well-known for their wide selection of homemade desserts, entrees, baked goods, boxed mixes, and cozy atmosphere.
But now, get ready to add Jewel’s to your rotating dinner scene, as the thriving breakfast, brunch, and lunch spot is taking on dinner as well. With a revamped dinner menu, including classics like their famous mac & cheese or chicken and waffles (all gluten-free, obviously), lookout for the newcomers like their Beef Stroganoff and Red Wine Braised Short Ribs, but also fresh, unique plates including Buffalo Cauliflower “Wings”, the Portabella Philly Sandwich, and the Vegetable Curry.
Of course, AZFoodie got the first look and taste of their all-star lineup, and you’ve got to try it to believe it. We started our night off with a couple of hand-crafted cocktails, getting to try the Juniper’s Cure (my personal fave made with gin, ginger, and sake), as well as the Carbonise Ananas (grilled pineapple, local tequila, and coconut water) and the Peach Bourbon Sangria.
For appetizers diners have an array of choices from the shrimp tacos to the cauliflower buffalo “wings”, but we set our sights on the ahi poke served atop chicharrones. Perfect flavors as well as serving size.
Dinner was a flavor parade between the green chile cornbread waffle with pulled pork and slaw and the braised short ribs with polenta and brussels sprouts. We nearly licked our plates clean before we would let the friendly waitress take our plates away.
Last course was dessert, and while we didn’t think it was possible to fit any more food in our bellies…well, where there’s a will, there’s a way. Because was no way we were leaving without indulging on the butterscotch chip cookie, served in a mini cast-iron skillet, topped with dark chocolate ice cream.
We cannot thank Jewel’s enough for having us in, and we wish them continued success. But they probably don’t need my wishes, because the menu speaks for itself!
Jewel’s Bakery and Café is located at 4041 E. Thomas Road, and is open from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily.
