Crust Simply Italian restaurant is well known across the valley for their fresh and flavorful menu items, while remaining authentic to old world family traditions. So it was no surprise that when they opened up shop in downtown Chandler, I knew that they were going to be an instant hit. The vibe is very rustic inside the restaurant with edison bulb light fixtures, brick walls, and even a 3-whisk chandelier piece above the pizza oven. While dining on their menu of classic Italian dishes like rollatini and chicken francese, we were delighted to find out that we would also be taking a tour of their basement, which encases a prohibition era speakeasy. What once was home to secret gatherings in the 20s and 30s, then turned to storage for Dr. Chandler himself, boxing up old ostrich feathers in hopes of one day turning a profit. Keeping with tradition, Crust decided to pay homage to Chandler’s rich history of ostrich ranching and fittingly named the 100-year-old basement “The Ostrich”, decorated with a real ladder used to access the underground hideaway, as well as booths from Monti’s la Casa Vieja, a Tempe icon. While Crust is open for business and set to have a grand opening celebration at the end of September, you will have to wait for craft cocktails from The Ostrich until later this fall.
Plenty of room for large parties, but also intimate enough for a date night for 2.
I myself grew up in Chandler, and I look forward to many returns here at Crust.
Pictured above is their Original Pizza with tomato, mozzarella, basil, and EVOO, their Pepperoni & Ham Rollatini, and the Chicken Francese with lemon, white wine, and butter.
We also snacked on The Caesar salad, Mozzarella stuffed mushrooms with breadcrumbs, and the Tortellini alla Panna with prosciutto, cream, mushrooms, and peas.
