I think many can relate to the struggle of wanting an affordable, healthy meal without skimping on the delicious factor but needing it on-the-go. Personally, I was Chipotle’d out after eating it all the time in undergrad and let’s be honest, with the added cheese, sour cream, and guacamole, my lunch becomes a day’s worth of calories faster than they can remind me that the guac is extra. Which is why I am especially excited that Salad and Go is here to fill the affordable, healthy fast food void in the Valley.
Salad and Go opened up their first location (in the southeast corner of Gilbert Rd. and Guadalupe Rd.) back in early 2013. Since then, they’ve expanded their drive-thru salad shop concept to three additional locations throughout Gilbert and Mesa with three more locations coming soon in other parts of the Valley. Speaking with co-founder and owner Griffith Tran, their continued success not only must be credited to their precise service and diligent staff, but to their menu’s creative director. Award-winning Executive Chef Daniel Patino spearheads the delightfully fresh and flavor-packed offerings. Per the Salad and Go website, Chef Patino comes from years of experience in fine dining. Having worked in hailed restaurants in New York City (Daniel) and Chicago (Charlie Trotter’s) then working as the executive chef at Arcadia Modern American Steakhouse in San Jose and Bourbon Steak in Scottsdale, it is undeniable that Salad and Go’s menu has been designed by someone with a superb gastronomic aptitude. From using seasonal ingredients to making all their dressings from scratch in small batches, every bite is salad bliss. Here are a few salads I had the pleasure of sampling recently:
- Southwest Caesar – Was originally a seasonal selection but due to immense popularity, it has made it to the main menu. I added shrimp that was marinated in extra virgin olive oil and herbs and it was perfect!
- Roasted Sweet Potato & Strawberry – A fantastic balance of sweetness from the sweet potato and strawberries to complement the champagne vinaigrette.
- Fall Harvest (from their seasonal menu) – I added the herbed grilled chicken to this and it tastes just like autumn goodness but without the guilt.
The salads were gourmet quality, prepared quickly and at a great price point. I am so excited to see Salad and Go in other neighborhoods soon and I cannot wait to return to try their breakfast items too!
